NY file No. 25-40294
Document dated January 5, 1944 entitled "Withdrawal of &ppeal
From Determination" and signed b LEVIS 2. HERSHRY, s Director of Sal Selective
Letter dated January 12, 1944 from the Local Board to Go.
ARTHUR V. McDERMOTT, Director, Selective Service for the City of Hew York,
which is quoted as follove:
s We have refused to issue registrant a Perutt to Depart from the
United States (DSS Form 351) for the reasons stated in our letter dated
January 5, 1944 to Walter Jeffreys Carlin, Chairman, Appeal Board Mo. 11,
Brooklyn 2, New York. To be more specific, because unanimously we felt, and
etill feel the Government should avail itself of registrant's services for
_ the duration and not only for a short period of time.
" We note, that under Section 623.34 (0) of the Selective Service
Regulations, if the registrant is believed to be capable of any duty at all
the Local Board could recommend his induction inte the Armed Forces and the
Director of Selective Service may accomplish that purpose by requesting a
waiver of the defect in order to permit the induction of the registrant.
In this way, the War Departsent could utilise his entertainment abilities to
entertain enlisted personnel both at home and overseas, the Selective Service
System could perform its functions to the fullest extent by seeing to it that
a person of registrant's outstanding ability as an entertainer servebis
country to the best of his ability in the fullest possible measure and,
the wishes of the Var Department and registrant, himself would de granted
at the sane time.
bd Yor, indiscussing this matter with the registrant t Monday evening,
he stated to the Local Board that he was not opposed to induction if he
could be assured that he would be used as an extertainer. And inasmuch as
the war Department by requesting his services as an éntertainer overseas —
indicated its desires and intentions to use him as an entertainer, it
seoms that the induction of the registrant under the section mentioned would
be the best possible solution to this case.
a You will, therefore, find enclosed herewith registrant's complete
“file together vith a full statement of the facts, in duplicate, and the
- yecommendation of the Local Board which you will be good enough to process
under Section 623.34 (ce) of the Selective Service Regulations.
Very truly ‘yours,
GTG:LW G ft.
