The Jommittee for the Firat Amendment has been cited by the Caltfornta Coumittee on Un-American Activities tn its 1948 Report aa follows: "A recently created Communist front tn the defense of Conmuntsts and Communtat fellow travelers. Its tumeditate purpose ta to create favorable publte optnion for the Communteate who refused to teatify before the House Gonmtttee on Un-American Acttyities tn Nashington, De C.” The “Datiy Werker,* dated October 30, 1947, contained @ newa article concerning a "Step Censorshtp” neeting which was to be held on October 30, 1947, at the International Theater, Columbus Circle, New York City. The purpose of this meeting, according to the article, was to protest the "House Un-American" hearings whitch were betng conducted in Vashtngton, De.
