It is to be noted that JOHN GATES was one of
the twelve indicted Commmist Party leaders who were convicted
in New 1orn vcavy in 19h)9 for violation of the Smith Act.
The "Worker" dated July 23, 1950, page 2,
column h, contained an article reflecting that the New York
Labor Conference for Peace had issued a call for a demonstra-
tion to be held in Union Square, New York City, at 5:00 poem.
