information in the past, advised in 1944, that Duke Ellington

. At the na ation of the American Youth for
Democracy held in New York, New York, in 1946, the report of
the National Board was presented on Sune 15, 1946. The report,
in reviewing activities of the American Youth for Democracy,
reflected that the “Tribute to Fats Waller" held at Carnegie
Hall, New York, New York, in April, 1944, had been sponsored
by the American Youth for Democracy. The report stated that
the meeting had turned into a "tremendous, spontaneous demonstra-
tion of inter-racial unity." The report further reflected that
Duke Ellington was smonz those individuals who joined with the
American Youth for Democracy in this event, The American Youth
for Democracy has been designated pursuant to Executive Order 1045:

the sponsorship of the Joint Anti-Fascist Refugee Committee,

On August 7, 1944, the "Daily Worker" contained an
article captioned "Stars Lead Coast Dem. Committee," which
reflected that bandmaster-composer Duke Ellington was a menber
of the executive board of the Hollywood Democratic Committee.

Relief opened its 1946 activities with a concert the preceding
evening in hew York, New York, Duke Ellington was listed as
one of the sponsors of the concert... The American Committee
for Yugoslav Relief, Incorporated, has becn designated
purrutant to Executive Order 10450,
