” a - 4 7 . aa mn ‘a 4 bre ov. "9 e Dear Mra. Roosevelt: Thank you for your letter of last Tuesday, Oct. &7th. If you will again read the first lines of the senond last paragraph of my letter to The Buffalc News of October let, T @m sure you will find that I used the word, “amazing,” and not “amsing" in connection with a remark in your letter of June ora, 2952. I fully agree with you that there was nothing "amsing" in the comment referred to. I regret that I mst disagree vith your staterent that you "have never made any speeches or said anythin: ir my aolumn that in any way was derogatory to this nation." Most of your colums relative to the Hiss case appeared in only the eerly mail edition of the Buffelo Courier-Express and are therefore not on file either at the local libraries or at the offices of that paper. That of January 26, 1950, written at Portiend, Ore- gpn, happens to be availeble and is quoted herewith: “Everyone hes been asking mo whnt I think of the Alger Hiss jury verdict. I do not see thet there 4s much to be said. .. Trial by your peers is sun- posed to be the last word in safeguarding the innocent. 80 how oan any of us question it? There {s one more safeguard of appeal and Kr. Hies' counsel has annovneed that he is going to appeal. He must believe in his cli- ent's innocence and THE ULTINATE TRIUMPH OF TRUTH. “Whittaker Chambers as I understand it, her mr- fessed to ali the sins of which he eccused hr. Hiss, including perjury, but if you are a witness for the Government, you are of course exempt from punishment. If you had a bad conscience and wanted to eure. you would be safe, THIS SEES TO ME AN EMINENTLY WISY VAX ™ GAIN SECURITY AND PEACZ FOR THE PUTUFE.” Referring to the first words 4: caps, they meks it obvious that, in your ovinion, TRUTH did not triunpt in the jury's verdict--and this after you hrd asked eberr, in res: erence to.that verdict, "How can any of us quertion 4:1" In concluding this colurm you have con? en recerd with a etatement which, if it mans anything, is definitely “derogatory to this nation" ani ite system of trial ty jury. If 4t means nothing at all, neither do any of the remarks which have recently been shouted to the world by Vishins?y. Moleteff, Gromyke and Comany, so raucously. Seriously, Mra. Roosevelt, after some yerrs have parsed, would you be Willing at this time to repeat those remarks, orally or otherwise? AND ASK YOURSELF -- IF NOT, WHY NOT? -.- ae aes = - 2
