VICTORY IN REY YORE In the Spring of 1955, Combined Artists, Inc., s television producing firm, reached an agreement with the New York City Youth Boerd to produce a full length motion picture based on the Board's activities in dealing with juvenile delinquency in that city. According te The_Esv ublic of December 26, 1955, page 12, Combined Artiste subsequently enlisted playwright ARTHUR MILLER, author of fhe Crucible, All My gone and Death of a Selesmen, to write the film acript, When advised of MILLER'S participation in the film, The American Legion Nationsl Commander J, ADDINGTON WAGNER issued a statement to the New York press calling attention to that fect that “during the past eevers! years, MILLER has been identified with many orgenizetions offictelly cited es subversive.” WAGNER declared that “in view of the beckground af fili- ations of ARTHUR MILLER with numerous Communist front organizations. The American Legion now aske: ‘Should he be entrusted with the deli -ate mission of objectively portraying the subject of juvenile delinquency on the ecreen?‘" A eix-member subcommittee appointed by the Youth Board to study this matter further, voted five to one in support of MILLER'S continued participation in the film on December 6, 1955. As a direct result of Cormander WAGNER'S statement in conjunction with the New York press, the full Youth Board overruled its subcommittee on December 12, and voted to drop all association with the film. Let vs examine MILLER'S record: According to The Americen Legion files, ARTHUR MILLER has been affiliated with aumerous organizaticns and publications which ere cited as subversive and Communist by the United Stetes Attorney General and the House Committee On Un-American Activities. He bas supported the Win-The-Peace Conference, World Peace Congress, Americar. Youth For Democracy, People’s Institute of Applied Religion, Inc., Progressive Citizens of America and Stage For Action. (See RUAC, Review of the Scient ‘fic end Cultural Conference Por World Peace, 1949, pages 9, 11. 22, 32, 33 and M4). MILLER has been affilisted with the Voice of Freedom Comsittee, World Federation of Democratic Youth and was listed se « supporter of Cocruunist Bookshops in 1949. 4 Sponsor of the Scientific and Cultural Conference For World Peace that same year, he was affilisted with the Coumunist magazine Masses & Mainstream. He also sponsored the Met ional Committee To Repeal The Mundt Bill, American Youth Congress, Book Mind Club, Internations) Workers Order, and wis 2 1948 Contributor to Jevish [ife, @ Communist publication.
