A 284824 further that she claimed she had not used her official position to assist Communists but had just done the normal thing when receiving &@ request for help of sending it to the regular department. However, he advised that on 1/11/39 in Committee hearings SUMNER WELLES stated that Mrs. ROOSEVELT sent hin @ letter asking WELLES to help both GERHARDT and HANS SISLER in their admittance to the United States, and later, on 2/7/39, @ispatched another let WELLES in favor of admitting the EISLERS. On 1/24/39, stated that MESSERSCHMITT of the State Department spoke favorably toward admitting HANS EISLER. also advised that Mra. ROOSEVELT tried to get a coumission vy but was unsuccess . Later 8 able to get onumissioned i the Army. He stated that in their executive hearings on which the HCUA has not made publio as yet, EARL BROWDER stated that the American Student Union was one of the transmission .belks used by the CP. QU stated that he ifs convinced that ELEANOR, JAMES, FRANKLIN, JR., and ELLIOTT had "finagled® on their ._. income tax. However, he had no information to back up his atatement and stated it was just his conviction. He also stated that although he believed Mra. ELEANOR-ROOSEVELT was not a member of the CP, she used her influence to got Communists V7 into the Government and into the US and to protect them as smo as possible. He advised that whem MARTIN DIES was head of the HCUA he was afraid of Mrs. ROOSEVELT dus-to her terrif{o influ-~ ence in the Govemment. advised that oh one occasion, the date of aaa Associate Director CLYDE TOLSON on a train and in a discussion claimed that the Director stated there were 30 cases where people wanted to come into the US and that the board -. =: @nd INS barred them, but in every one of these cases the - stated he got these names from the Director; the HCUA investi- gated, but no hearings were held.
