Dear Senators
There have come to ny attention newspaper reports of the testimony
given before your committes recently by J. Edgar Hoover, dealing with the
presence of scp non-Commnist"observers” at the recent national convention of
the Commniet Party of the United States. As ons of those who attended the
convention in that oaproity I want to register a strong protest to some of Mr.
Hoover's assertions, and to > express the hope that you will eorrect the record
at important points.
To begin with, I protest the use of the expression “hand-picked” as it
4e applied to the observers. The implication that the Conmnist Party or its
leaders selected us is totally false, as is the parallel sugrestion that we
wers chosen as ones who would be partial toward the Party. The fact is timt
individuals were invited, or organizations asked to name representatives,
precisely on the grounds of their anti-totalitarien, non-Communist records,
oombined with a concern for the preservation of oivil liberties. wt.
Secondly, Mr. Hoover errs grievously in referring to A. Juste as
one “who has long fronted for Communists." I have been a member of the staff
of the Fellowship of Reconoiliatian for fifteen years. During most of that. =
tine Hr. Miste was the exeoutive secretary of the organisation, while for ‘ie
past three years be has been secretary exeritus. The anti-totalitarien position
of the Fellowship has been a matter of record for the forty-two years of its.
existence, and was never more clearly in evidence then during the years of ir.
Muste's tenure.
the’ Fellowship haa been at pains to reject all proposals for wnited-
front activities with the Commnists; it has been as firm in rejooting ‘eace
mi litariem and tyranny of the Soviet Union as it has been in,rs
militarism in our own country; and it has mie a point frequently of cautioning
both ite members. and Vhe public againat being deceived by rs 4 the
