LE a NATIONAL CHAIRMAN h fot . ‘AMERICAN VETERANS COMMITTEE (AVC) fie cf Avs f _ “40 . aren f Gl “ L "The Shreveport Journal" Shreveport, Louisiana, carried‘an ar title | on 4-4-61 captioned ''Veterans Group Demands Probe in Mississippi"' reporting that Mickey‘Levine, National Chairman of the American Veterans Committee dy | had written the Attorney General demanding that an investigation be conducted in Mississippi regarding the leadership of the White Citizens Council. Levine specifically referred to the use of police dogs to disperse a crowd of Negroes who had gathered in Jackson, Mississippi, to protest prosecution of nine Negroes connected with a library sit-in demonstration. Levine protested fo od a " - segr egation practices followed in Mississippi and said "terrorism and official murder has been the policy of the officials." He stated "our Federal Bureau HE Investigation has been surprisingly ineffective in its spasmodic efforts to intervene." National Advisory Council - members include Orville/Freeman, AdlaiStevenson, Senator PaukPouglas of _ ' Wlinois, Senator Har ison/Williams of New-Jersey, Senator Stephen~Young of Ohio and Robert RN athan, former head of Americans for Democratic Action. tg INFORMATION IN BUFILES: A security investigation of the AVC was conducted between February, 1947, and April, 1950. At its inception the AVC was reportedly infiltrated by communists in local chapters particularly in New York k City, Los Angeles and Lata ta tame “= on 1 Washington, D. C. At its national convention held in Chicago in 1949, a strong anticommunist group was elected to office and at that time investigation indicated the organization was relatively free from communist influence and domination.
