an interview had with My. Matthew F, NoGuire, Assistant to the Attornay
General, upon the authority of Mr. L. R. Fennington,I wish to reoard
_ the additional information as hereinafter set forth,
Er. NeGuire advised he desned it preferable to have all —
requestea in the future exmenating from The Miviscry Commission te
the Council of Kationel Defense clear through the office of the
Attornay General in order that that office might be advised at all
times concerning the names of the individuals upon whom investigations
are being requested of the Bureau, Hs explained that thie situation
was brought to a head through a recent request made by Mr, Sidney
Sherwood at The Advisory Comeisaion to the Bureau for an investigation
of Mise Edith Hels who is @ personal secretary to lirs. Roosevelt, the
wife of the President. He explained as a result of the Bureau's
dnvestigation Miss Helm had apperently learned that inquiries were
being made concerning her and Er. lcOuire inticated although he did
not estate as much, that this had been brought to the Department's
attention by the President. He explained that he was going to contact
Mr. Sidney Sherwood immediately and arrange for all these requests to
