I was saddened to read of the notice served on the Rev. RYbert . €Neill who vas
removed from his Southern Presbyterian, pastoral post in Columbus“Ga., on the order pf
his church's governing body. It is intersting to realize that Rev. McNeill was born jr.
Birmingham, Ala., and that it was only affer he grew up that he made the discovery thatja
belief in segregation on the basis of race or
color is a dangerous philosophy.
I don't think his dismissal will do Rev, McNeill
himself any harm, for lam sure there are many
ehurches thal would like to affirm a belief in free
speech for their ministers, and I will not be
surprised io find that such churches exist in
the South.
The harm lies in the fact that such a decision
indicates a fallure to understand what disservicr
is being dene to ovr country in the over-all
gituggle of democracy versus communism.

All-of.as know from the records that the men
of the.South know how to die for their country,
and the women have known how to support their
men. But it ig a much more difficult thing to live
fov your country when it means a change in the
mores that you have been brought up with.
