Representatives of orcantzed labor have been vigorous in the attacks and criticisms they have made upon the Conmittee, its sponsors and tts purposea, claiming that the Committee is actually attempting to install a aystem of labor spying within the industrial tnstitutions. The Federal Bureau of Investigation was not consulted at any time concerning the establishment of this organization, nor were the views, attitude or aduice of the FRI sought in the situation. The F5I has not sponsored, endorsed, or approved this orcanization, The Cleveland Industrial ‘<afety Committee has not at any time fur- nished any information whatsoever to the FBI concerning matters relating to the national defense, desptte the fact that one of the major justifications used by the proponents of the Committee tn soltciting membership 4s the clain that the Comnittee whll sack furnish all data recetved immediately to the FBI tn accord with the Presidenttal request of September 6, 1939. The Lirector of the Federal Bureau of Investication/has indicated through (his) 33. Spectal Agent in Charge at Cleveland, Ohio, to Eliot Ness, Dtrector of Public Safety, his opposition to any undertaking to perform duttes of law enforcement by ctuiltan groups functioning in the capactty or manner of a vigilante or ciyilian secret service group. In the present situation this condition ts aggravated by the fact that the promoters of the organization have a mercenary motive because of the potenttal budget approrimating $150,%00.00 per annum and virtually negative expenses.
