STEINBERG : Director, freaiend League WwW, * Bi fF, c i peaking ranches, Dear Reader: We, the undersigned, are convinced that one of the greatest needs of the American Jewish community in our time of conformity and propaganda is intellectual inde- pendence in thinking about Jewish problems. <- _ We are also convinced that the Jewish Newsletter has been an effective medium in this field. It has done a creditable job of independent reporting and interpreting Jewish news as it came up from week to week during the ae last twelve years. ‘ \ However, a8 a nen-profit publication, whose primary purpose is the advancement of an idea and the perform- ance of a public service, and which has no income from advertisements, the Jewish Newsletter is faced every year with 2 deficit which it cannct meet fram {ts own resources. Once a year it therefore appeals to its readers and friends for contributions, in addition to their subscrip- tions, to enable it to go on with its work. Last year, the deficit was larger than usual, and the need for help i more urgent. . <{ ” . Because we know the value of the publi€ation's unique service to the American Jewish and non-Jewish communities, and because we also know the needs of the Jewish Newsletter, we wholeheartedly join its appeal. Will you please do whatever you can to help the Jewish Newsletter in its double task -- that of produc- ing a thought-provoking publication and of providing a much-needed platform for the free discussion of Jewish problems. , {(% F oh “LGR 9G > Whatever contribution REC FO make will be {FARE t appreciated and will help the very much worth whi Sm cause of intellectual freedom -~- a cause which i od vital importance to American Jews as well as to all other... Americans. oS Sincerely yours * NOMMAN THOMAS Nee York 1, FOWARD TONKON Erichyfromm Hans Kohn ons. E. DAVID WEINBERG ENCCO: ATTA D : . : Cras RE f 7 ~ David¥Riesman i y co,
