Because the use of the military resources of the
United States in Vietnam and clsewhere suppresses
the aspirations of the people for political independence
and economic freedom;
Secuuse inhuman torture and senscless killing are
being carried out by forces armed, wniformed, trained
and financed by the United States;
Decause webelieve that all peoples of the carth, in-
eluding both Americans and non-Americans, kaye an
inalienable right tolife, liberty, and the peaceful pur-
suit of happiness in their own way; and .
Because we think that positive steps must be taken
to put an end fo the threat of nuclear catastrophe and
death by chemical or biologics] warlare, whcther these
result from accident or escalation ~-

We hereby declare our conscientious refusal to
cooperate with the United States government in the
prosecution of the war in Vietnam. .
We encourage those who can conscientiously do so
to refuse to serve in the armed forces and to ask for
discharge if they are already in.
Those of us who are sublect fo the draft aursclves
declare our own intention io rcluse wo serve,
We urge others to refuse and refuse ourselves to
take part inthe manufacture ortransportation of mili- +
tary equipment, or to work in the ficlds of military
research and weapons devclopment. ¢
‘We shall encourage the devolopment of other
nonviolent acts, including acts which involve civil
disobedience, in order to stop the flow of American
soldiers and munitions to Victnam’.
NOTE: Signing or di.tri uling this Declaration of
Conscience might be cmstrued as a violation of the
Universal Military Tre ‘nig and Service Act, which
pronibits advising perscns facing the draft fo rofuse
service, Penallies of rp to 4 years imprisonment,
and/or a fine of $5,000 :r¢e provided. While prasccu-
tions under this provision of the law almost. naver
occur, persons signing or distributing this declaration
