MC CARTHY under obscene cover, ’ _e DETAILS: This investigation is predicated upon informationg received from Washington Field setting out that a three page handprinted obscene letter had been receiged on April 3, 19685 at the office of the National Finance Committee, MC CARTHY = for President, Suite 314, Capitol Hill Hotel, Washington, D. C., which letter was postmarked March 31, 1968, at South Haven, Lh Michigan, and bore the return address: of ROLAND TERRINTINE, 72nd, Covert, Michigan, 49090. The letter was addressed to Citizens for MC CARTHY, Washington, D.C., and was prepared in red ink on lined stenographic paper. A .22 caliber rifle bullet was afixed to the upper righthand corner of the first page with adhesive tape and followed the wording, "This will be my contribution to Mc Carthy....". The letter also contained a threat to kill Senator MC CARTHY and contained a drawn sketch of a rifle barrell illustrating how acoustical packing might be used to make a silencer. The letter was signed with the name ROLAN TERRINTINE, 72nd, Covert, Michigan. On April 15, 1968, this matter was discussed with Assistant. United States Attorney JAMES W.
