Department of Justice oe Ce ws On 8 Paurean of Inbestigation ba 2blg> ar B aw « Oj Box 32, . Jacksonville, Florida, Bureau of Investigation, “ay 1] 4|C30Qepartment of Justice, Washington, D. C,. Dear Sir: Although the period for making suggestions relative toa 7 possible nane to designate special agents of our Bureau _ has, I assume, elapsed, yet I am tendering the following: Tos We are now designated and term ourselves, in approaching ‘--,. + persons to be interviewed and in describing our positions at in court, as Special Agents of the Bureau of Investigationg=\ Pia, Department of Justice. This description appears a little Aa (7 re long and cumbersome, particularly in the minds of more or less >." -- illiterate peace officers in the country communities. The pd="9 2S” dition of "Department of Justice" identifies us, in many nmrds, as Prohibition agents, for the reason that agents of the PronisOp. bition Bureau are now uniformly styling themselves, in this com- munity at least, as "Department of Justice agents", which I assume they have the right to doe If a designation for us could be adopted which would not cause our Bureau to lose its identify as a Governmental investigative service and yet would enable the hearer to disassociate the Bureau of Investigation from the Bureau of Frohibition, I think the situation would be met. ms ¥ : ee Me noe em cneateas re DT, be ee SH I believe the simple designation of Federal Investigators would serve the purpose for agents of the Bureau of Investigation and Feceral Bureau of Investigation would adequately and yet differ- entially describe the service as a whole. This terminology would fit any condition thet might arise in the future, either through consolidation of existing investigative agencies or through the assignment of additional laws over which investigative jurisdiction would be conferred. In describing one's position for ordinary pur- poses or in court, the statement "I am an investigator for the Fead- eral Bureau of Investigation" would be illuminating and yet tending to avoid confusion with any other service. The fact that the Fed- eral Bureau of Investigation is one of the organizations dependent from the Department of Justice could be conveyec, if further questions are askede ti 1 ohten tans at RS ae babi a at ”- ¥ tee het . ws cates ; vA truly yours, ocece Ke fletizn Louls Deliette, De:SLH Special Agent in Charge. vee ee 8 re ne es ee ee ee S eaiaeuanatieesantae manana re ee
