with the interested countries and permits them to use the aerial space,
the rivers, the railroads and highways, it will not concern us, but the
German Democratic Republic. It is its sovereign right.
"There are people who say that the Western powers will
open the passage to West Berlin by force. I want to state: If anyone
intends to force passage, our military units, located in the German
Democratic Republic in order to safeguard peace, will use force against
the violators of peace and the hotheads of the West may think of the
consequences of such action for them.”
Question: "Considering the case of the plane and your
attitude toward President EISENHOWER, would you not * prefer that the
visit of EISENHOWER be deferred?"
N. 8. KHRUSHCHEV: “I shall exchange opinions concerning
this particular subject with the President when we meet in Paris. As ©
before, we are trying to find ways for an improvement of the relations
with North America. We shall maintain normal relations with the
United States and we trust that in time the Soviet-North American relations
will be transformed into friendly relations with the peoples of our countries.
This would be normal and all normal people aspire and will aspire to
attain this.

N. 8. KHRUSHCHEV: "Finally, I want to tell you the
following. With those who invade the territory of our country, violating
our sovereignty, we shall deal severely. But we want to live in peace
and friendship with all peoples. Understand our situation, gentlemen,
when we censure with indignation such aggressive acts. However, we
shall look at things prudently and we understand well that the polemic,
even the most violent one, is better than war. Therefore, we shall
do everything to 'digest' the present aggravation. We shall do everything
to normalize the international situation and to re-establish the good .
relations with the USA, provided that the United States also cooperates:
in this 8 respect.
