Hubbard December 8, 1969 Supervisory Trial Attorney Criminal Section b7c Attormey, Criminal Section Conversation with Illinois State Senator Charles Chew, Jr., December 8, 1969 at 9:30 a.m. Senator Chew came to Washington on behalf of 10 black Illinois legislators. These people have conducted a limited investigation into the Panthers shootings and have concluded that an impartial fuil investigation is needed. He came to Washington to ask the Department to conduct such an investigation; another member of the group is going to Springfield to ask the State Attorney General to investigate. The group's investigation indicates that Fred Hampton, Chairman of the Chicago Chapter of the Black Panthers, was shot by a machine gun while sleeping in bed. The police got access to his bedroom window by means of a ladder, The group examined physical evidence at the scene and it appeared to them to indi- cate that Hampton was shot in bed. They also had an autopsy performed on Hampton's body. The raid on Hampton's, apartment was ordered by State's Attorney Edward Ramanan, a former United States Attomey who was elected State's Attorney at the last election, The raid was carried out by police cc: c h7C Invest.
