Panther trial judge
_ urges settlement

FEDERAL DISTRICT Judge John Grady on Friday
* urged both sides in a $47.7 million Black Panther civil
Tights case to consider settling the 10-year-old case out
of court.
“It will be another long, arduous trial,” said Grady,
to whom the case was transferred from Judge Milton I.
. Shadur. “It will cause the reliving of events extremely
painful to many people in this conimunity.”*
« Settling out of court, he said, “would be an act of
aegal statesmanship,” : !
The case was filed by relatives of the Black Pan-
« ther’s Fred Hampton, who died in a predawn police
raid on Dec. 4, 1969. The defendants are then-State’s ,
Atty. Edward Hanrahan and various police and Feder-
al Bureau of Investigation officials,
An earlier trial lasted 18 months, the longest in
federal history, and ended in June, 1977, with a hung
jury. Judge Joseph Sam Perry then entered a verdict
in favor of Hanrahan and the others, The United States
Supreme Court in June ordered a new trial.
GRADY ORDERED a two-week hiatus while atter-
neys of both sides discuss a settlement with their
clients, .
“There is room for substantial concessions on both :
7 Sides. Neither should feel overly confident’? about vic-
pny, he said.
