Saxbe, according to the AP wire servic by Margare#Gentry, today stated at his press conference that Patricia Hearst “was not ¢ reluctant participant" in the San Francisco bank robbery “and that he considers her a common criminal. At his weekly news conference he stated he | was expressing his personal views about Miss Hearst. He stated he feels the .FBI would be justified in breaking into a dwelling to capture her and SLA membe He stated he included her as part of the group of common criminals about which he was talking. Mr. Saxbe stated he was not giving any signals or orders to the FBI but he believed that if the FBI knows where the SLA members are hiding, - they should go in and get them. SAC Bates contacted my office when Attorney General Saxbe's statements hit the wire services. Bates stated he is already inundated with calls from the media for his response to Saxbe's statements. It was agreed that the Bureau's position would be as follows and Bates stated he would cs/ { respond to press inquiries as follows: The FBI has no comment to make con cerning Saxbe's statements regarding Miss Hearst's involvement in the bank robbery and kidnaping. The FBI is continuing to investigate the kidnaping, as\ well as the recent bank robbery so as to develop all facts concerning both crime: and to identify all those involved.
