Reed of our Sacramento Office veremnodond advised that "The Sacramento Bee" a responsible, daily newspaper had received and made available to us, a letter and cassette tape recording reportedly from the Symbionese Liberation Army (SLA). _The envelope was postmarked Berkeley, California, April 19, 1974. The cassette tape was contained in a plastic container. Accompa- nying the tape was a letter on yellow lined paper which was typed in large letters similar to a speech writing typewriter. On a piece of white paper which was affixed to the back of the yellow | lined paper was the seven headed cobra symbol and the letters SLA. The letter essentially stated that the SLA would not tolerate "“Slaughtering" of their members and would make retribu- tion of five police officers for each SLA member killed. The contents of the tape are very similar and the tape itself appears: to contain two separate voices, probably those of white males. SAC Reed indicated he is sending the envelope, letter l “and tape to the Laboratory and Identification Divisions for examination. The origin of this material appears questionable in view of its content and format. ACTION: 4 None. For information. .
