Memorandum to Mr. Gebhardt
RE: HEARNAP
Special Agent (SA) Ls Night Supervisor, LAO, was
subsequently contacted and advised that above incident occurred at Mel's
Sporting Goods Store, that all subjects were white with a white female
sitting in VW. Apparently one of the bandits in the store using submachine
gun fired about 70 rounds around the store. Departing in the VW, they
headed toward the Los Angeles Airport, stopped a 1970 Pontiac Lemans, took
the female driver from the car and told her they wanted the car, that they
were with the SLA, and that they were going to kill some people. After
the three departed in the Pontiac, they later ran another woman in a 1965
Chevrolet off the road, took it and headed to Inglewood where the local
authorities attempted unsuccessfully to locate and apprehend them in rush-
hour traffic. SA Q§RMMPedvised that early identifications indicate that
apparently Emily and William Harris were in the store and a girl identified
as being in her 20s with long auburn colored hair, mole on cheek, who look-
ed like Patty Hearst was in the VW. SA@3RMMPalso advised that in the VW
was a citizens band radio that had been purchased the afternoon of 5/16/74, .
at a K-Mart store and a mass of food purchased from Thrifty Mart along with
Levis purchased also the afternoon of 5/16/74. People at the store where
the Levis were purchased identified Emily and William Harris as the cloth-
ing purchasers.
LAO determined from Department of Motor Vehicles that the VW
bearing paper or temporary plates came from the San Francisco area and
the vehicle had recently been ticketed in Inglewood. As a result, tele-
phone company, gas, power and light companies were being contacted to
determine occupants of residence where VW registered.| All cars involved
have been impounded and are being processed. Interviews are being con-
ducted with people who sold goods to those involved in shooting; merchandise
purchases being checked out and all logical investigation is being pursued
in an expedite manner.
ADIC and SAC, Criminal Section, LAO, are supervising on-the-scene
investigation.
SA advised that teletype containing full details of above
would be furnished Bureau as soon as possible.
SAC Schutz telephonically requested at 2:00 a.m. services of a
Bureau artist since it has been determined that the VW had been purchased
from a car dealer in the San Francisco area on 5/6/74, and although no
photographic identification could be made by the dealer, it appeared that
the individual was considered as an excellent witness. Arrangements were
perfected with Inspector Exhibits Section, for artist
to depart for San Francisco via Trans World Airlines Flight 67: arriv-
ing San Francisco 11:18 a.m., 5/17/74. SFO was notified to meet
