Hea@st, yo - President of San Francisco Examiner Newspaper, was : kidnaped at gunpoint from her Berkeley, California, apartment by white female and two male Negroes. White female indicated she was having car trouble and wanted to use telephone. When victim opened door, two males, carrying automatic weapons, fired shots and beat one Stephen Weed, victim's fiance, who was visiting her. Victim taken away in bathrobe and placed in trunk of white vehicle. Neighbor who heard disturbance also beaten. a a Although severely beaten, Mr. Weed called Hearst . oe e. residence in Hillsboro, California, and advised sister on Victoria who in turn notified victim's parents visiting in Washington, D. C. (WDC). Victim's parents notified Berkeley Police Department and requested FBI enter case at once. Subseguently, ASAC John T. Kelly, San Francisco Office (SFO), telephonically advised SFO unaware of any - . aor ransom demand. ASAC Kelly advised he had conferred with cane ‘ Mr. Hearst by telephone at Mayflower Hotel, WDC, who boy so gave him full approval for Agents to enter Hearst . _. residence and arrange with telephone company monitoring of incoming calls. According to ASAC Kelly, victim's parents departing WDC at 9:00 a.m., 2/5/74, via United Airlines and will arrive in San Francisco approximately 11:50 a.m., when they will be in contact with our SFO. ASAC Kelly also advised due to prominence of Hearst family extensive news coverage being afforded this matter in San Francisco area.
