Randolph A. Hearst, Pr ent of San Francisco Exa@fPer News- a
paper, was kidnaped at gUnpoint from her Berkeley, Galifornia,
apartment evening 2/4/74. Following summarizes numerous
demands for ransom received 2/6/74, in San Francicso and Los
Angeles Divisions and other pertinent developments:
Our San Francisco Office (SFO) advised anonymous call to
Los Angeles Herald Examiner (LAHE) Newspaper, 2/6/74, demand-
ing 15 million dollars for release of victim. Classified ads
will be placed in numerous papers to read "Pat is 0.K.” and
caller states victim's father to be at Roosevelt Hotel, New
Orleans, Friday, 2/8/74.
SFO also advised individual identifying himself as Leon ¢
WHith demands $500,000 for release of victim. Money to be
placed in Globe taxi cab, Giant Food Store, 14th and Newton,
Washington, D.C., by 8:15 p.m., 2/6/74. Our Washington Field
Office {WFO) subsequently advised stationary lookout estab-
‘lished overlooking Globe cab.
SFO also advised two phone calls received San Francisco
Examiner wherein unknown man demands $80,000 and wants two
armed FBI men to meet him when he makes next call; no mention
of victim and no further contact. SFO Agents located box of
nine millimeter jacketed bullets in Berkeley search 2/5/74
preliminary examination of one cartridge from box indicates
quantity of potassium cyanide. Symbionese Liberation Army
(SLA) in letter to newspapers claimed SLA killed Oakland,
California, Superintendent of Schools who was believed to have
been killed with bullets drilled and filled with cyanide
Los Angeles Office advised unknown male telephoned LAHE at
8:13 p.m., 2/6/74, and asked to talk to same man he talked
ight (2/5/74) (Los Angeles Office previously advised
iy : LAHE, owned by Hearst Family, received telephone
ca emanding $50,000 in small bills and Cessna 150 aircraft
for 2/6/74). Los Angeles Agent advised caller he was same per-
son. Caller stated Patricia was 0.K. and would be released if
everything went 0.K. Caller asked if plane ready and instruct-
ed drop be made from plane 9:00 p.m., 2/7/74, at golf course,
Brea, California. rg LAHE believed caller identical
with man who calle
Victim's father decided he will not authorize $50,000 pay-
ment to caller since he had no identifying information from
caller to establish he is actual kidnaper.
Bureau artist at Berkeley preparing artist's conception
based on descriptions furnishe esses. WEO attempting
to identify Leon Smith.
