Diracter Sec’y . SAC Bates, San Francisco, called at 3:40 p. m. oth” and advised, | there appeared to. be a contact in the Hearst kidnaping. He advised that - of Station KPFA, 2207 Shattuck Avenue, Berkeley called Mrs. Hearst at 11:05 a.m. (San Francisco time) stating ion had received a note from the kidnaper, accompanied by a Mobil Credit-Card bearing the name of Randolph Hearst. It purported to be from the Symbionese Liberation Army dated 2/4/74 and stated that the SLA had their daughter; that she had been tried by that court and found guilty; that she had been taken into protective custody; that she would be released a unharmed if their conditions were met; and that there should be no X \e cooperation with the police, jr ¥ ad an He stated that all the conditions must be published in full and that further conditions would follow. He requested that Mr. and Mrs. Hearst come to the station and pick up the message, stating that he would not afford this any publicity until they had arrived and received the message. He was assured that they would be over immediately to pick up the message and would leave as soon as Mr. Hearst returned and would arrive possibly — within 45 minutes. He asked that she not tell anyone and he would wait to announce it on the air after the message was picked up. Mr. Bates said that Hearstleft their home at 11:50 a.m. (SF time) (about 50 minutes ago) and they are in Hillsboro and have to drive to Berkeley and should be the&fby now.
