Telephone Rm, Divecter Sec’y —— This memorandum is to provide backgrolind information . regarding the Symbionese Liberation Army (SLA); the organization { _apparently involved in the 2/4/74 kidnapping of Patricia Campbell "Hearst. at Berkeley, California. The SLA came to our attention following the 11/6/73 ambush slaying of Dr. Marcus Foster, Oakland, California, School Superintendent, and the wounding of his assistant, Robert W. A Blackburn. On 11/7/73, the "San Francisco Chronicle" and Oaklard } radio station KPFA each received a comminique in which the SLA _ claimed responsibility for the shooting. This communique <ideseribed itself as..a-Warrant Order issued. by the Court. of the. “1, People- and targeted’ ‘Foster and. ‘Blackburn: “for. execution by. eyanide : bullets "for crimes against the children and life of the people." Prior to the receipt of this communique, the Oakland Police Department Laboratory had identified cyanide crystals on bullet fragments taken from Foster's body, thereby supporting the SLA's claim of responsibility for the incident. On 1/10/74, Joseph Michael Remiro and Russell J. Littie | were stopped in a van owned by Nancy Ling Perry by a Concord, California, police officer.. Remiro, in possession of the caliber .380 automatic used to kill Foster, opened fire on the officer, but he and Little were subsequent ly apprehendeér=~s ssearcheot the van revealed a stack of SLA leaflets.
