Bates to Gebhardt Memo
RE: HEARNAP
On 2/7/74, the first "Communique" was received from —
the group identifying itself as the Symbionese Liberation
Army (SLA) claiming credit for the kKidnaping and enclosing the
Mobil credit card of the victim's father. Immediate investigation
was instituted regarding the SLA in connection with this kidnaping
in an effort to identify all members, associates and locations of
Sites which might be utilized by them. It is noted that the SLA
-had come to the Bureau's attention in November, 1973, in regards
to the killing of Dr. Marcus Foster, Superintendent of Schools,
Oakland, California.
On the initial tape recording received from the SLA
a male individual identified himself as Field Marshal "Cinque"
and it was immediately noted that Donald David De Freeze wanted
as an eScapee in California, utilized the names Cinque and/or
Cin as an alias. Subsequently, various individuals familiar with
his voice have identified De Freeze as being one of the individuals
whose voice is on the tapes. A UFAC warr is presently
outstandine for De Freeze as well as for another
hich investfpra i identified
2 dm Nilay .
. In connection with the murder investigation the Oakland...
Police Department seized a quantity of material from various SLA
residences. Laboratory examination of handwriting contained in
the material seized is identifiable with purported known
handwriting of Nancy Ling Perry and Mizmoon Soltysik who have
also been identified as suspects in this case and as SLA associates.
The purported known handwriting of Nancy Ling Perry has also been
identified with the writing on the envelope containing the tape
recordings received. It is also noted that a review of the materia?
seized disclosed considerable verbiage of a revolutionary nature
indicating kidnaping plans and assassinations similar to this case
and the killing of Dr. Foster.
UNIQUE INVESTIGATIVE ACTIVITY
In an effort to locate a 1963-64 light colored Chevrolet
Station Wagon believed utilized by the subjects during the evening
of the kidnaping the San Francisco Office obtained a list of
approximately 2,000 such vehicles. It was determined that approxi-
mately 500 of these vehicles were registered in the Berkeley-
Oakland, California area.
