BERKELEY, Calif. (AP: — News-
Paper magnate Randolph Hearst yes-
terday said he could not possibly meet
the demand of his dausater’s kidnapers
for a multimillion-dollar food giveaway.
But he souch: to assure his dauchter
and her ehductcrs by vowing to de
“everything in my power” to set up
some kind of food distribution precrain.
To 18-year-old Patricia Hearst. he said,
“Hang in there, honey!”
Later, Charles tates, the FBI acent
in charge of the kidnanpi::g case. said
he had “never scen anvthing coed come
out of compromising with a bunch of
hoods," Bates said he had no disagrce-
ment with the position of the Hearst
famiiy in secking to meet-the kidnapers’
demands.
However, Bates who called this the
first political kidnapine he xnew of
in the United States. said he doubted
granting the kidnapers’ demands wou'd
gain Miss Hearst's freedom. He said. “f
think the chances are good that one de
mand would follow another forever.”’
Hearst first told reporters that it was
impossible to meet the kidnaners’ de
mand — estimated by state officiats to
