the shootout that occurred in Los Angeles, California,
on 8/17/74 between the Loa Angeles Police Department (LAPD),
FBI and members of the Symbioresé Liberation Army (SLA) the

taken by either the law enforcement officials at the scene
or the suspects within the house, an officer using a bullhorn
repeatedly requested the suspects to surrender and come out '
of the house. When no response was received,.a tear gas ;
canister was thrown through one of the windows. The suspects
immediately began firing at police officers on the scene,
using automatic weapons of various types. This firing
continued for a considerable period of time and the law
enforcement officers fired in return,

“the house occupied by the suspects was completely
destroyed by fire. The Los Angéles Fire Department was ©
available, but could not move into the area until the
shooting stopped and the occupants did not cease firing until
the house was completely in flames. No positive statement
can be made at this time as to the cause of the fire.
