large town of the Loire-Atlantique (France) region, in La Bernerie-en- —
Retz. The occupants of the hideout, located by the inspectors, had gone,
taking just enough time to tear up some papers. These papers were
patiently reassembled, and thus a telephone number was discovered.
This number was that of Mr. Arnauld Chastel, age 29, a research attache
with the C.N.R.S, (National Council for Scientific Research), belonging
to the theoretical physics center of the polytechnical school.
At the residence on 91 rue Broca (Paris 20), where he lived,
the men of Commissioner Ottavioli, Chief of the Criminal Brigade,
immediately noticed the staircase leading to the second floor: a wooden,
circular staircase, some of whose steps squeaked untler the feet,
Similar to the one which Mr. Suarez had described.
eae a, a The director of the Bank of Bilbao was taken to see the house
on rue Broca. Not only did he recognize the staircase, but other things
as well: the room where, stripped of all his clothing and wearing only - _
pajamas, he had lived for nineteen days. He had even groped his way, .. -=. *:
. blindfolded, and without. any hesitation, to the wash basin he had used.
He aiso recognized the parking ofa dog, and the loud crying of a child.’
Several Points Cleared Up. - | .
In the room, the investigators discovered, tied t6'a window
looking out onto the courtyard, the piece of rope which was to be used
for the escape of those guarding Mr. Suarez, if-the need arose. The
police officers then discovered that Mr. Chastel and his wife had moved
in late April, a few days before the kidnapping of the bank official.
Mr. and Mrs. Chastel moved to 44 rue des Arcades, Paris (20), still,
all the while keeping the apartment on rue Broca. They jJearned that
Lucio Urtubia, a tile setter, one of the kidnappers, had done some
work for Mr. Chastel, and had helped him with the moving.
- “Despite all this evidence, Mr. Chastel stated to the 7h
investigatars: "It is impossible that Mr. Suarez could have been held .
at my house. I went there on several occasions with my wife between
May 3 and 7, and we did not notice anything abnormal."
= -
"Yet, on that date, Mr. Suarez was there, with three guards,
- . which quite obviously implies a certain moving about. The fact that
Mr. ChaStel had not noticed it resulted in himself and his wife, Chantal,
age 34, being taken yesterday evening to Court. . His wife told the same
story as he did. ; rs °
