FBI told me, they told me after these sort of things happened.” said this source. “Ht was a fan- tastic chance, but we didn't know anything about it until after the play took place and the whole thing fell apart. se. Maybe the point was not driven home enough (to bank ~ employes). The FBI did ask bank officials for help but I don't know how forceful the request was,” This official also said the FBY does not keep local au- ihoritics adequately tuned in tothe progress in the case. " “The FBI is supplying us with their reports after the report is made," the official added, “which could be any- where from days to weeks. We don’t necessarily know what the FEI knows on a day to day basis. if we did, it could help our own investigations. “They might get something they don’t really under- sland because it doesnt relate to their part of the case but that information could be important te our phase of the investigation”. an An investigator in another phase of the case added: “We share our information dui the FBI does‘nt share ‘theirs. The Berkeley police didn't even know about this bank thing until the whole thing was cold. . “The time they should have been told was on Feb. 25 when the trail was hot... that’s the day the FBI subpoe- naed the bank records and knew that Nancy Perry and the Hall girl had money in there.” Local authorities also were critical of the FBI's failure fo stake out the bank. The Tribune quoted one source close to the investigation as saying: “It would have been only logical to put one hell of a surveillance on that bank. .. any one of a dozen departments would have jumped at the chance to watch that bank inside and out, night and day.” The apperent FBI slip is not the first, investigators said. Miss Hall’s 1968 Volswagen was used in the kidnaping and was later sold toa used cardealerwho resold it. The buyer, who was driving the car while the FBI was scouring the entire West for the vehicie, was a secretary in the San Francisco headquarters of the FBI, the office that was heading the search. Miss Hall, Miss Perry and four other SLA members died in a May 17 shootout in Los Agneles. MissHearst and are still fugitives. “It was a shame but I can’t really blame the FBI per 7 _ > two other suspected SLA members, Bill and Emily Harris, f \ a taleee Wael ate nee eee eaten
