She sees that fate as her murder at the hands of the FBI and the “corporate state”. The intro- ._ fection already presaged in the communication of Tape 3, has by now become strong enough to make such distorted logic as borrowed from her abductors at least intellectually plausible to Patricia. Unconsciously, however, it is the fear of continued ambiguity about her fate which she must attempt to resolve. On the one hand, Patricia is faced with the proximate, daily and .continuous evidence of the caring for and affection. | afforded her by her captors. On the other hand, she reads and has inter- preted for her through the pathology of the SLA, inaction, public sus- picions of duplicity and parental indecision. Those things she has found cause for guilt, her unearned affluence, position and prestige and for which She has already attempted expiation through acting out against her parents, have now become precisely those things which her captors require her to renounce for the reward of their love and regard. What she dislikes most in-herself, but which she has nonetheless feared to relinquish, now are cast as requiring abandonment for her very survival. -What instru- mentality her position may have afforded her in the past has now become a: pragmatic liability in addition to its psychological liability.
