When she reached this low point Patty's captors probably somewhat relaxed the pressures ~ (@) placed upon her so that she was at least capable of digest- © ing the information given to her regarding S.L.A. doctrines '* and beliefs. Sha was probably so grateful for this relief , from pressure that she listened with a mind too eager to inc. comply. With the fear of death no longer ipainent, Patty : must have begun to wonder if she had done sonething wrong to deserve that sort of treatment. In addition, she was _prabably made to feel quilty more for who she was {daugh- ter of "a.corporate enemy of the people”) than for the specific “crimes" she had committed, ; To willingly accept an entirely new way of life .and set of values, especially when they are the antithesis of the ones previously held, is a conversion deemed virtually impossible by psychologists during such a short period of time. Even if she had accepted some aspects of their way of life, there 4s no way that she could have peen simply “talked into* committing herself to violence and killing as the means to achieve the goals of the S.L.A. Thus, it seems very plausible that the only way Patty could have been converted to the S.L.A. was through ccercive methods similar to which I have described. ’ Tune - Ups ‘Batteries Road Service _ Tires | } ABA 1733-1595 Corner of Wis. No one has heard anything fron her for more than six months. I feel that this 1s largely due to the attitude of the press and the American public. A San Francisco columnist has called her a dunt blonde, and one reporter who has written a book atout Patty is extrene- ly critical of her life before the kidnapping, even though the author had never met her. Public cpinion from coast to coast seems to be against her, protably resulting more from an atmost insane jealousy of the rich than from any- thing else. It 15 apparently very difficult for most people to realize that rich people, too, can have nice kids, and that a few months ago Patty was a very congenial person, Perhaps if more people thought of Patty as what she really is -- a kidnap victim who has undergone much fear and severe psychological manipulation, not a voluntary revolutionary and bank robber -~ then she night some day feel free to see her family and friends. ‘io one expects that she could be capable of returning to her former life, but at least she could speak freely to those who were once closest to her. And then, we would te abie to discaver what really happened to Patty Hearst, * oe rete mes? we >! 4. 8 4, es soe ae a, _ eet a oe’ all your ar€ . ‘te?
