pe Sire,
The HARRISes at the present time aretserving Sy
il years in the California Prison System on prior, convictions,
and projecting the possible additional sentences, “could be.
eligible for parole hearing in 1981, and the HARRISes* are
predicting that they will be released from prison by (1983.
Alameda County prosecutors are of the feeling that the
release date will be at least 10. ears.
Following the entry of £he guilty plea, the HARRISes
were allowed to address the approximately 40 sympathizers
present in the courtroom, at which timé WILLIAM HARRIS indi-
catea that the guilty plea did notsindicate a feeling of
remorse and went on to claim pride ih. accomplishing the
"first political kidnapping in the United States". HARRISes
alleged that PATTY HEARST, although a kidnap victim, was not’
brainwashed, beaten, or raped. Further, that she was not.
locked alone in a closet for days or weeks and was not
coerced into rejecti g. her family. Press reaction to the
accepting of the pléa, bargain by state authorities was mixed
with the state author ities.defending their position that a
trial growing out of thes2/4/74 kidnapping of PATTY HEARST
would cost the taxpayers a5, much as $300,000 and last for
two or three months. Opposing editorial comment was directed
at a possible early release date for the HARRISes, whereas
if they had gone to trial and been convicted of kidnapping
with bodily harm, they could have been sent to prison for
life. whe HARRISes alleged that they forced the government
to back ddéwn and into dropping the more serious charges in
connectit <a incident.
