The Hearst Foundation 1s a front for the Hearst fartune,
The foundation serves as a tax loophole for that fortune, Tne
foundation donates an estimated $3 million a year to estabiisned
charities to maintain its legal status as a foundation, The
$1.5 million proposed to be coming from the foundation is nothing
more than half of what that foundation is legally required to do=
nate annually in order to maintain tts foundat-on status.
The assets of the Hearst Corp. have been stated many times,
However, I will restate them again as some specific factors.
As we all know, the Hearst Corp, 4s composed of a chain of magzae-
zines, newspapers and TV stations, Hovever I wish to point out
two specific ones as examvles, Cosmopolitan magazine resps pro»
fits of $7 million to $8 million a year, Another is House BexutGie
ful which reaps profits of $3 million to 34 million a year, Ths
Hearst Corp. ts also composed of feature film industries and
ownership of lamber companies and large stock holdings in General
Motors, as well as lend holdings in each of the cities where the
newspaper okains operate, For example, owmmership of one square
block in New York City ts valued tn hundreds of millions of dollars
for the land alone. . . os
In total, the Hearst empire along wth Mr, and Mrs. Yeersts?
rersonal wealth does in fact go into the hundreds and hundreds
Of millions,. Even if Mr, Hearst was to give all that to the peopla,
with friends such as the Shah of Iran and Howard hughes he would
suffer no losses. However, even if Mr. Hearst were to give ail
of that to the people, he could never pay the people bask ofor
- the past losses of their children and freedom, nor for the current
suffering they are now under,
The food plan proposed byylir, Hearst is not at all acceptable
as a gesture of good faith in its present form, It shall be
acceptable only in so far as it totally meats the specifications
as listed in the following: .
1. That an additional $4 million be added to the #2 million
already allotted, making a total of $6 million to be usei for
the purchase of food, We reccpnize that at wholesale pricea
aveilable to Mr. Hearst and his designated "People In Need"
oharity organization, he will be able to feed all who come to
receive food, ‘Ye specify yholesale prices here because weedo
not intend for Safeway or any other supermarket to make a profit
from feeding the poor. Nor do we intend for this to be another
program which subsidiees the food industry.
2. That this tosal of $6 million worth of food be distri-
buted in the cities of San Francisco, Oakland, Eest Falo Alto,
Richmond, San Jese, and Santa Rosa, That an adeouate number of
distribution centers be made available to vartous commmities
in these cities: San Francisco -- Mission District, Chinctown,
Hunter's Point, Western Addition; Oakland ~- Fast and West.
