Re Reference to Atonic Energy:
Cuetic further testified before the House Committee
on Un-American Activities in February, 1950, regarding
the Committee's inquiry on whether he had discussed with
Steve Nelson, (Communist Party leader for the State of
Pennsylvania) Russia's knowledge of atom secrets. Cvetic
reported: "In so far as the atom secret, I always thought
| tt was the better part of discretion not to ask any questions
concerning esptonage of the atomic bomb.* However, he quoted
Steve Nelson as having stated after the announcement of the
atomic bomb explosion in Russia: "We have the atomic bomb
now and the enemy won't be in such a hurry
to start a ware" Cvetic stated that the word "enemy" referred
to the United States.
The Pittsburgh Office advised that their files
had failed to reflect that the above information had been
previously reported by Cvetic to their office during the
time he was a Bureau informant.
The testimony failed to tndicate any other reference
to atomic energy information.
