In his absence, she spoke to ASAC A. H. Belmont, Vy i é oo She advised that she had a matter of “major political importance" . Q to discuss with him which she desired to discuss telephonically. Miss ““ . THOMPSON said that this morning's newspapers carried a reply f from Ma¥sh&le =z STALIN to the open letter of HENRY WALLACE dated last week. A.side from the “s undesirability of having WALLACE conduct negotiations with another country through such a letter, Miss THOMPSON advised that she had a "hunch" that WAILACE had been in touch with Moscow prior to the issuance of his open ~— to STALIN. She based this on the following: On Tuesday, May 11, 1948, HENRY WALLACE held a political meeting +. in Madison Square Garden in New York City, According to Miss THOMPSON, “~~ the publication of the contents of + ADELL SMITH — MOLOTOV conversations, which had teken place May 4, 1948 in Moscow, — reached “this country on the he Associated Fress wire a little after 8:30 pm on May 10, 1948. Miss THOMPSON, who oe . attended the meeting, said that this flyer was distributed at approximately Mi i 10:30 pm on May 11, 1948 by ushers at the meeting.
