Fer the benefit of the New Orleans Office, the follcwing
excerpt from a form letter requesting funds dated March 8, 1942, which was
sent cut by the Highlander Folk Schcol, is quoted:
"Sdded to cur ccmmunity program is the activity of the staff in the labor
field, Our extension worker, MARY LAWRENCE, is expecting to leave soon
fcr educaticnal work with unicns in New Orleans, where a large orgagizational
drive is in progress. A special two weeks' sessicn for union members will
spen here on ay 12."
As an example of the type cf literature distributed by the
Highlander Fclk Schcol, Exhibit Nc. 42 is being enclosed. It will be ncted
that mention is made cf 8,000 miners in Grundy Ccunty whs will be effected
by an increase in salary cf one @vllar per day and that the lecal merchants
will benefit in a total amount cf $8,000 per day as a result. The entire
popula@icn of Grundy County is only 9,717, according tc the 1930 census.

In Exhibits numbered 3 thrcugh 20, numerous references are
made tc strike activities on the part of ‘MYLES HORTON, WILLIAM BUTTRICK,
JAMES DOMBRGWSKI and ZILLA HAWEScvamceng the residents of Grundy County, There
are two specific instances mentioned in which the activities of these per-
sens from the Highlander Folk Schccl caused strikes which definitely lowered
the income cf the persens striking.
One of the few industries cf Grundy County is the cutting of
word fcr pulp purposes, which is known as bugweod cutting. Before these bug~
wood cutters were organized by perscns from the Highlander Folk School
they were getting a price cf $1.50 per corc fer the wood they cut. After
the strike the price was drcpped to cne dcllar per cord and the quantities
purchase were drepped to such an extent that cnly about half cf these pre-
vicusly emplcyed cutting this wocd were again emplcyed for the same purpose.
