Ninetcen children from fifteen Summerficld families attended the
Nursery Schcol which began its new term on May 12. Five of the
neiphberhoot families sent their children there fcr the first time.

nursery school work this year, starte’ a series of weekly
meetings for young girls in the neighborhood, for the purpose cf
education and recreation.
In Grundy County: The School's new traveling library distributed
a total of 728 books, of which 343 were juvenile. Weekly dis-
tribution of news sheets and cartccns on unionism hac tc be dropped

HIGHLANDER ABROAD.
Extensicn Work: Mary Lawrence, a member cf the Hichiander
teaching staff, launched an ccucational program fur the CIO
Industrial Union Council in New Orleans. Onc hundred and twenty
unicn members attended the opening of the cfficers!' training

Schcol, which includes classes in labor history, parliamentary law,
public speakinz, publicity, and union problems. “Special classes
have bcen added as they were requested by individual unicns, and the
schcol is still carrying on this work.
Staff members helped Paul Christopher, State CIO secretary,
anc other labor leaders in the crganizing werk, beth in the county
and State.

June 1, and several cther staff onbers attended the ‘Convenition.
The school was also represented at the state conference on Democracy
held on Lincvln's Birthday in Nashville; at the Berea Cclleze Student-
Labor Conference in March; the spring conference of the Southern
Mountain Workers at Knuxville; the meetings cf the Scuthern Con~
fercnee for Human Welfare Council, and the Tennessce Commcnwealth
Federation Council. A class in music was given at the YwCA indus~
trial firlst summer school at Camp Merriewood, Sapphire, N. C. by
Zilphia Hurton, music director at Highlander Folk School.
Highlander's function as a center for progressive thcupht and
action is attested-by the larze number of teachcrs, writers, journa-
lists, labor leaders, sovernment cfficials, social workers, anl many
other croups whe visited the schcol during the past six months.
