Origin
The Righlander Folk Bchool which is located on the highway between
Vonteagle, Tennessee, and Tracy City, Tennesses, was founded on a plot of land
donated by Lillian Johnson, Ph.D. in 1932. Dr. Johnson came to MNonteagies in the
early 1920's at which time she showed a great deal of interest in the community

school system end the public health of the community. She was very much inttrested
an and attempted to help the underprivileged clesa of people who reside in sb Grundy
County. To this end she donated the tract of land which is now used by the
| Highlander Folk School. The two people she chose tc establish this school were
t Myles Horton end Don West. Horton had been tho State Chairman of the Socialist
Committee in Tennessee for tte campaign of 1932, while Don Kest was reported te

incorporation under the Code of Tennessee of 1532. This charter states that the
Roget particular purpose for which this charter is sought is the support of the High-
ab lander Folk School adult education, the training of rural end industrial leaders,
win _ and general academic education. The incorporators were Kyles Horton, Elizabeth
Hawes, Jaxes Docbrowsxi, Rupert Hampton, and Malcolm Chishola.

In @ pacphlet published by the Eighlander Folk School it is stated
that the school was founded "to provide an educational center in the South for
the training of rural and Industrial leaders and for the concervation and
encouragement of the indigenous | cultural values of the mountaina.® Activities

courses in History, econozics, union publicity, parliamentary law, public
apcaking, dranatica, aud are taucht how to orzanize a union, conduct union
meetings, present grievances, how to call and organize strikes and to effectively
bargain with exployers. fhe Highlander Polk School alec conducts an extension
"ir. Tein, program by sending varicus members of its faculty to any union who asks for
