A House resolution calling
for a second legislative inves-

approved by the Senate yes-

launched to determine if there
is “probable cause” to believe
Highlander is subversive.
THE CENTER was investi-

when it was located at Mont-
eagle and called the Highland-

The center’s state charter
was finally revoked on
grounds that beer was sold il-
legally, The name was
changed when the center
moved to Knoxville and a new
charter was obtained.
Sen. Fred Berry, R-Knox-
ville, sponsor of the resolution,
urged its passage, saying ‘‘the
Senate needs to stand up and |
be counted on this matter.
“If what we hear about the
school is true, we should do
something about it,” he said.
“Tf not, it should be erased.”
EARLIER SEN. Jerry Agee,
D-Nashville, had read from
what he said was a 1957 Con-

Midsouth.”
Agee said that some people
associated with Highlander
were mentioned in the report
as “possible Communists.”
Many legisiators have
warned that the investigation
will be a “witch-hunt,” uncon-
stitutional, and “damaging te
the prestige of the legisla-
ture.”
EARLIER THIS week the
American Civil Liberties
Union released a statement na-
tionwide saying that such an
investigation “would seriously
impair freedom of speech and
association,
“Such an inquiry would have
a national impact by helping ¢
to revive the spirit of MeCar-
thyism in other states,”
statement said.
