This report, which was critical of the FBI's civil zightstinvestigation in Albany, was prepared by Dr. Howard Zinn, Professor at Spélman‘€ollege, Atlanta, Georgia. Zinn was horn 8-24-22 at’ New York ff... City and resided in that city until he obtained employment with the Atlanta college in 1956. He served in the U. S. Army in World War II and thereafter attended New York University, receiving a B.A. degree in 1951. He thereafter received a M. A. degree at Columbia University in 1952 and a Ph.D. at that school in about 1956. | Zinn has been the subject of a security investigation by the Bureau : ; and informants have reported that he was a member of the Communist Party in New York from 1949 to 1953. He was also known to have been associated with communist front groups in New York including the International Workers Order, the American Pesce Mobilization and the Committee of One Thousand. Zinn was inter- viewed by Agents in New York in 1953 and again in 1954. He dehied membershipfin the Communist Party but admitted association with communist front groups. He described himself during the interview as a liberal interested in civil rights but claimed that he would never be involved with any organization detrimental to the security of this country.
