Agent to appear before the Police Trial - Mr. Hoover instructed Mr. Tams to wire the Birmingham office to orm the Lieutenant that the metter should be taken up with the Washington headquarters of the Bureau. Mr. Hoover stated that in the event they request Agent Obenshain to appear before the Police Trial Board he would be willing to have him do this. Mr. Tamm advised that with regard to the impersonation case in New York which Mr. Hoover inguired about, the matter hes been handled by the New York office since last January and five or six reports have been submitted. Mr. Hoover instructed Mr. Tam to ask Mr. Whitley why he let the U.S.Attorney get ahead of him on the mtter. Mr. Tamm advised of the letter from SAC Stein, in which he advises that Karpis advised that he went to an attorney in Dayton, Ohio naned John Egen and had this attorney write into the Bureau to see what the status of the chirges against the Delaney woman were and that the attorney told Karpis it was too hot. Mr. Tamm stated he wes having the files checked for this letter. Mr. Hoover stated that if such a letter was written, Mr. Connelley should be instructed te thoroughly interrogate this lawyer. Mr. Tamm advised that Karpis was also interrogated as to the name of the contact whom he alleges had a hold on some Bureau agent through which Kerpis wes able to obtain Bureau reports; that Karpis would not divulge the name of the contact, stating that it was a professional man; but stated that the agent at the time was working out ofthe Detroit office in Ohio territory; that Karpis when esked if he recalled the contents of any reports, stated he recalled one in which the advisibility of picking up the Angus brothers in Toledo was ciscussed and which also contained the statement o Mr. Tamm advised tha b/C they are checking the reports for this repcrt now. . Hoover stated that Mr. Tamm should call McKee and advise him to continue questioning Karpis in order to learn anyvbing more along this line. Mr. Tamm advised that Mr. Connelley is taking Suran and Sullivan with him to Toledo; that he is there nor. Mr, Hoover stated that Mr. Conneliley should stay at Toledo until the matter there is ¢leared up. Mr. Hoover instructed Mr. Tamm to send a teletype to Mr. Hanson instructing him to call Mr. Hoover immediately at the Hotel New Yorker. e J.E A. ¢
