BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH OF JOHN EDGAR HOOVER,
RECTOR, FEDERAL BUREAU OF INVESTIGATION.
John Edgar Hoover was born January 1, 1895, in the District of
Columbia and was educated in the Public Bchoole of the District of Columbia,
graduating from Central High School in 1913. During the eame year, 1913,
Mr. Hoover entered the Library of Congress as a Clerk, and enrolled in
George Washington University Law School as an evening student. He holds
the Degrees of LL. B., LL. M., and LL. D., from The George Washington Univer-
sity and has been admitted to practice law before the bar of the Supreme
Court of the District of Columbia; the United States Court of Claims, and
the United States Supreme Court. He is a trustee of The George Washington
University.
Mr. Hoover entered the Department of Justice in 1917 as a Clerk
and in 1919 was appointed Special Assistant to the Attorney General. From
192] until 1924, he served as Assistant Director of the Bureau of Investiga-
tion, and in May, 1924, be was named Director.

Army. He is a member of the Columbia Country Club, Chevy Chase, Maryland;

Conference of Erie County, Wew York;, In November, 1955, Mr. Hoover was named
a wenmber of the Royal Order of the £rown of Rumania, with the rank of
Commander, as a result of hie activities in promoting closer international

United States ia or may be a party in interest. The organization has an annual
appropriation of five millions of dollare, with a personnel of over fifteen
bundred employees throughout thse United States. Under the direction of the
Attorney General, the Director of the Bureau directs the work of the Special
Agents who are employed for the purpose of detecting crime and collecting
evidence for use in proposed and pending cases for prosecution.
Mr. Hoover has under hie immediate supervision the Identification
