John Edgar Hoover was bern January 1, 1895, in the District o/
Columsia, He was educated in the public schools of the District of
Columbia and received LL.8. and LL.M. Degrees from George Washington
University. He holds Honorary Degrees fron George Washington Universtty ,
Pennsylvanta Military College, New York Untversity, Drake Untueretty, -
Westminster College, Oklahoma Baptist University, Georgetown Univeratty,
Notre Dame Universtty, St. John's Untuversity Law School, Rutgers Unt~
versity, the Universtty of Arkansas, Seton Hall College, Holy Croes
College and Marquette University. He holde an Honorary Degree of Doctor
of Sctence from Kalamazoo College and an Honorary Degree of Doctor of
Civil Laws from the Untversity of the South.
ifr. Hoover entered the Department of Justice tn 1917, and in
1919, was appointed Special Assistant to the Attorney General. Fron
1921 until 1924 he served as Aasistant Director of the Bureau of
Investigation and in May, 1924, he wae named Director.
ir, Hoover ts a member of the Masonite Order; Kappoe Alpha
Fraternity; Ontcron Delta Kappa; Delta Theta Phi; Alpha Phi Omega, aad
Zeta Sigma Pt. He tea member of many national and state-wide law
enforcement associationa, He te a truatee of the George Washington
Untversity; a trustee of the National Presbyterian Church; o member
of the Soard of Directors of the Central Dispensary and Emergency
Hospital, Washington, D. C.; a member of the Board of Directors of the
Boys' Clubs of Amertca; a member of the Nattonal Committee on Pudlic
kelations of the Boy Scouta of Anertca; and an Active Member of the
Grand Council of the Order of DeMolay.
He has been admitted to practice law before the bar of the
District Court of the United States for the District of Columbta, the
Untted States Court of Claims, and the United States Supreme Court.
On March 8, 1946, Mr. Hoover was presented the Medal of Merit
by the President of the United States. On October 27, 1949, he woe
awarded the "Theodore Roosevelt Diatingutshed Service Medal" by the
foosevelt Hemortal Association,
On May 2, 1950, Mr. Hoover received the Grand Lodge Medal for
Distinguished Achtevement from the Grand Lodge, F.A.A.M. of the State of
New York. we
On May 18, 1950, former President Herbert Hoover presented
