He was born in New York City on July 17, 1904,
the scn of James Cagney and Czrolyn Nelson Cagney. His father
owned a saloon at 2th ftreet and Avenue D, a neighborhood

continued as a chorus toy for 32 weelss. When the show closed
he went into a vauceville sietch playing a nart in Jewish
disleet. During the next seven years he toured all of the
tanx towns in the Hast. He returned to the legitimate stzege
in 1925, but a short time later went back to vaudeville. In
1929 ne and Joan Elondell went with Warner Brothers.
Cecasionally accused of Communist activities because
of a tendency to help those more unfortunate than himself,
Jimcy squelched these rumors thoroughly and officially when
he appeared before tne Dies Comittee in 1940. ‘touring in
Massachusetts when the charges of subversive activity came up
Jimmy «nen to Washington to defend himself. The charges
seemec to be vrimarily the result of his heving dcneted an
ambulance to the Abraham Lincoln Brigade, fighting for the
Loyalists in the Spanish Civil War, and his frequent
contributions to the relief of starving cotton pickers when
they were trixing. Ne explained it all by his impulsiveness
in responding to renuests for aid. Dies cleared him with the
ennouncenent that in his osinion Mr. Cagney was not and never
he sympathetic with the Communist movement but had let
nis name be used by Communist front organizations.
