ores 2 eee pears On July 12, 1947, a "Conference on Thought Control" was held at the Beverly Hills Hotel, Los Angeles, California. The conference Was sponsored by the Arts, Sciences, amd Professions of the Pro-ressive Citizens of Americas Paul Draper, a well-known dancer, spoke at this conference. The speech con- cerred his part in the production of the movie, "Time of Your Life," written by William Saroyan. Daring the reading of the script, Draper noted that he was to speak a line which ridiculed Hitler and had the effect of calling Hitler the most sericus menace of the day. Draner, realizing that the script should be re- vised, asked his director what line should be substituted for the Hitler li nee The director told Draper to substitute the name Stalin for Hitler. Draper said that he could not say such a line in the movie. Draper said that he talked to Jimmy Cagney, the vroducer, "Grips" ard many other people around the studio eames director told Draper to substitute the name Molotov for the name Stalin. Draper saw a4 represeniati ve of the J. Arthur Rank Proguctio:s with his script problem. He Was told that t.sy would not allow the distribution of any film in England that contained derogatory remarks concerning the Soviet Urione Draper vhen went back to see Jincy Cagney and told nim about this . decision. Draper said that things began to appen and the lines were taken out of the script immediately ard lines of no political significance were substituted. At the em of a conference, during a vanel forum, someone asked why Saroyan couldn't sue Jimmy Cagney for changing his scripte Draper said that that would be impossible Wwasmocn as throush the sale of the script, Saroyan had forfeited all rights to the use of his script and anything could be done with it that the producer wished.
