Putney.School, Putney, Vermonton January 26, 1956, to visit
their son, a student at the Putney School. They remained
there until January 29, 1956, at which time they returned
to their home in New York City. While in Putney on
January 26, 1956, HISS and his wife attended a church
supper but the source did not name the place where the
supper was held,
On February 19, 1956, Kae "New York Inquirer",
a column appeared indicating that HISS was seriously 11
at his residence and that his wife was forced to resign
her position at Doubleday Doran Book Store in order to
nurse him.
On March 1, 1956, confidential informant Te2,
who was in a position to know, advised that this report
concerning HISS' health was untrue and that his wife was
still employed at Doubled - and that HISS was engaged
full time at his residence in preparing his book, T-2
did not know the date of the book's release nor the subject
matter that would be treated in it.
On February 29, 1956, confidential informant T-3,
who has furnished reliable information in the past, advised
that HISS had been in contact with one JEFFERY SCHLANGER
of Swarthmore College, Swarthmore, Pennsylvania, on
February 28, 1956,
On March 1, 1956, all of tne Metropolitan news-
papers carried items to the effect that an invitation to
ALGER HISS to speak on the "Meaning of Geneva" at Swarthmore
College had been withdrawn,
The "New York Post" quoted ALEX SHAKOW, - of
» Bwarthmore Céliepve as saying that he wrote that the
invitation to speak had been withdrawn because of an "in-
ternal organization problem", He gave no further details.
