Later thac year he spent two-and-a-half months covering
the Lebanese civil war. Assigned to the London Bureau, he ranged as fap
as. the Khyber Pass, to Atghanistan and to the-Mediterranean. In mid-
1960 he was named chief of NBC News' Moscow Bureau, where he covered
the trial of Francis Gary Powers and other important stories.
During His Moscow tour of duty, he returned to the United
States to work on NEC News! coverage of the 1960 elections. He traveled
“with ‘the candidates and interviewed them on "The Great Debates, "in
1g, BAe tion to handling the Midwest Desk on Election Night.
He went back to Moscow, and returned to the U. ‘s. aga in in
July, 1961, to become host of NBC-TV's "Today" program for one year,
living in New York. He spent the balance of 1962 analyzing and
reporting on political develooments in the Far West during the election
campaigns. In that role he traveled in six West Coast states, visiting
the state capitals, gathering facts on election laws, election trends
and the candidates themselves. He was also anchor man for “The
Campaign and the Candidates" series of pre-election TV specials and
reported developments from the Far West on Election Night.
Chancellor returned to Europe early in 1963 to study the
‘Common Market, and reported on it in a widely acclaimed special, "A
Country Called Europe." In July he was named head. of the NBC News
bureau covering the Common Market in Brusseis. He returned to the U.S.
early in 1964 to begin preparation for his floor reporter assignment
at the conventions.
