John William Chancellor
Voice of America was announced in the press, he (the informant)
remarked to a homosexual friend that “one of us,” meaning
Mr. Chancellor, is “getting up in the world," referring to the
recent appointment. The informant stated that Mr. Chancellor
is not personally known to him, but he had heard of hin through
his (the informant's) homosexual associates before reading of
Mr. Chancellor's appointment, The informant further advised
that he had mentioned the appointment of Mr. Chancellor to '
“homosexual friends” and one homosexual named “Joe,” last name
unknown, remarked that he did not like Mr. Chancellor because, -
when he used to see him at a "North Side homosexual hang-out,"
he (Mr. Chancellor) “thought he was a big wheel." This informant
further stated that homosexuals do not normally learn the
complete names and addresses of their friends, unless one takes
the other to his residence, He added he hag no further informa- *:
tion concerning "Joe." The informant further advised that
Mr, Chancellor may be known to homosexuals by name due to his
prominence, but he (the informant) seriously doubts that any
homosexuals would admit having any knowledge of Mr. Chancellor,
Another informant*who hag furnished reliable informa-
tion in the past and who is familiar with criminal activities
in Chicago, Illinois, advised that he is aware of Mr. Chancellor's oe
recent appointment and, although he is not personally acquainted _
with Mr, Chancellor, knows him to be referred to by "fags" as eg ne tH
“Mother Chancellor." The informant further stated that in conver—"™ _
sation with two "queers” with whom he is acquainted he mentioned
Mr. Chancellor's appointment and asked them if Mr. Chancellor
is "queer." Both answered, "Yes, he is one of us," but they said-
they have never been “out" with him. Both stated they did not
know who had been "out" with Mr. Chancellor, but said he "traveled
with the crowd." Both stated that Mr. Chancellor had been to the
Blue Dahlia, a night club in Chicago which is known as a “queer
joint." This informant stated that these two persons referred .
to Mr. Chancellor as belonging to the “home crowd," meaning that
he does not openly "display his affections," but does so only
with a select group in "secure places." Ey
An individual who identified himself only as "a police
officer and good Democrat" telephonically advised the Chicago
Office of the FBI that the Administration of President Lyndon B.
' Johnson should know that Mr. Chancellor had been “locked up" a
humber of times by the Chicago Police Department. The caller
